On the Quality of Experience: A Multi-Modal Approach to Perceptual Ego-Motion and Sensed Presence in Virtual Environments

The current paper presents research on the quality of experience in virtual environments related to the European research project POEMS (Perceptually oriented ego-motion simulation). The objective of the POEMS project is to design a lean and elegant virtual reality system - using concurrent auditory, visual and vibrational cues - allowing for improved spatial presence as well as convincing simulation of egomotion without actually moving the observer.
