The world is now well on its way into the information age, courtesy of spectacular advances in computer and communications technology. And if past progress is any indication of the future, then we've hardly begun. The current emphasis on high technology implicitly assumes a future with ever more computing power and communications bandwidth - many orders of magnitude more, and an explosion in the number and variety of end-user functions that are available and served by such massive information infrastructure. This is the vision of the future in the information age.
