Since its commercial introduction in 1990, general-purpose large vocabulary speech recognition has found broad-ranging applications. Although dictation and document creation applications predominate, other significant applications have fanned out to span database /information retrieval queries, mail routing by name/address designation, directory/information services, voice programming, and electronic mail generation. This tutorial focuses on application requirements, and typical case studies of users in Europe and North America.
