Appreciating Face-to-Face Dialogue

Many scholars agree that face-to-face dialogue is the basic format of language use. Our program of research focuses on two unique dimensions of face-to-face dialogue: (i) communicative use of hand gestures, facial displays, and eye gaze and (ii) reciprocity and mutual influence between the participants. These two features often work together in ways that require new theories and research methods. Results of our research will be illustrated through microanalysis of a brief videotaped interaction that demonstrates the complexity and precision of even ordinary face-to-face dialogues.
