This is the unpublished inaugural professorial lecture by Professor Harry McGurk at the University of Surrey in March 1988. It is preceded by an introductory comment by Denis Burnham. In this paper McGurk charts his studies in infant perceptual development, and describes his discovery of the McGurk effect.
