This paper investigates the issues faced in developing multi-modal data services for public mobile telecommunications. It discusses applications, standards, mobile devices, and existing R&D efforts. Three demonstrators developed by the authors are presented, including QuickMap, a map finder based on GPRS and WAP-Push.
