As an introduction to the session on intonation applications we give an overview of some of the past and present applications of intonation research. The inherently confounded nature of information in the intonational manifestation poses a major obstacle. Despite this, we can see a number of application areas emerging, ranging from speech technology devices and systems to the use in medical diagnosis and rehabilitation. One especially interesting area is the pedagogical application of intonation research in language learning.
