This paper examines the underlying assumptions, simplifications, and supporting evidences for a variety of models thus far presented for the analysis, interpretation and synthesis of fundamental frequency contours of speech, and gives examples of quantitative comparison of some of the models. It also discusses the role of a model as a mediator between various types of information and an observed F0 contour.
