A Combined Speech and Visual Interface to the BT Business Catalogue

A combined speech and visual interface to the BT Business Catalogue is described. The system allows requests and commands to be input via three routes: continuous speech; typed text; or mouse clicks. The information requested is displayed in the form of text and graphics or played out from a text-to-speech synthesiser. Particular attention has been given to the issues of multimodal dialogue management, the interface between the speech recogniser and the natural language processing component, and the overall system architecture.
