Speech Technology for Visually Disabled Persons: Research and Practical Use

Twenty-five years ago there was considerable interest in compressed and expanded speech, but considerable doubt in the scientific community of ever being able to achieve acceptable full-vocabulary synthetic speech in real time. A quarter of a century later speech synthesizers are at affordable prices and can be given regional accents. The emphasis has now changed from the technology to generate synthetic speech to developing user-friendly applications.
