POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH POSITION

Spoken Dialogue / Embodied Conversational Agents
Boston University

The Medical Information Systems Unit at the Boston University School of Medicine is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to join several ongoing projects in the area of spoken dialogue for health communication with patients:

The qualifications for this position are a PhD or equivalent in a research area related to Natural Language, Spoken Language Processing, or Embodied Conversational Agents, particularly in the area of Dialogue. Interest and experience with speech, character animation, communications research, affective computing, machine learning, ontology development, empirical methods, and/or evaluation is especially desirable. Medical knowledge is a plus, but is not required. U.S. citizenship or a green card is required.

The position is located at the Boston University School of Medicine, in a unit comprised of five full-time and five part-time faculty in the medical, behavioral and computer sciences, two postdoctoral fellows, and a staff of 10. The unit has a strong track record over the last 15 years of obtaining NIH-funded grants to develop spoken dialogue systems and evaluate them in large-scale clinical trials. The position provides the opportunity to develop technologies that can help patients, get evaluated in real-world hospital and clinic applications, and also provides candidates the opportunity to learn about the medical field and the NIH.

This postdoctoral position is funded by the National Library of Medicine through their Medical Informatics Fellowship program. In addition to a stipend (based on number of years of postdoctoral
experience) and health insurance allowance, the NLM provides a generous tuition allowance, and candidates are expected to continue their education during their two-year tenure, with educational opportunities offered through BU and other Boston-area institutions.
