To help the modelling and simulation of hybrid speech algorithms, and the fast prototyping of applications using speech input or output, the new concept of artificial laboratory for speech processing is proposed. Such a system provides a large range of computing facilities integrated in the same framework. After an overview of the system and the presentation of the different levels of reusable components, two applications recently developed with the system are outlined as examples. Both applications use speech input and benefit from the artificial laboratory. Because of the fast prototyping capabilities provided by the artificial laboratory more time can be spent on the testing and the use of the applications. Consequently, new insight on the use of speech input for building applications can be obtained. Keywords: Artificial laboratory, reusable components, integration, cooperative algorithms, prototyping
