This paper investigates the effectiveness of using simplified speech patterns based on voice fundamental frequency, speech amplitude envelope, and the presence of voiceless excitation for Chinese lexical tone and consonant perception by hearing impaired Chinese listeners. The test results indicated that for one listener with profound hearing loss (>100 dB) at high frequencies (1 KHz and above), the perception performances from the presentation of voice fundamental frequency information were distinctively higher compared with speech presentation. Listeners with less severe hearing loss were able to make good use of both amplified speech and simplified speech pattern information. Keywords: speech pattern perception, hearing aid, lipreading
