Reconstructing dialogue history

Marc Swerts, Emiel Krahmer

This paper deals with a perceptual analysis of accent structure in Dutch to see to what extend listeners are able to reconstruct information from the previous discourse on the basis of prosodic properties of the current utterance. Using data collected in an an earlier dialogue game experiment, subjects were asked to perfom a perceptual task in which they had to reconstruct what the previous utterance was on the basis of input utterances with different accent patterns. Our results reveal that listeners are able to correctly guess the prior context for a significant number of cases, but that performance depends on the type of intonation contour of the input utterance.
