This paper deals with the evaluation and the efficiency of different dialogue strategies for speech dialogue systems. The main aims of dialogue strategies are:
A method of representation for dialogue is proposed, allowing to evaluate the dialogue strategy efficiency in terms of speech turns. Four dialogue strategies are described and evaluated when understanding failures occur. This rather theoretical approach is then used to analyse two corpora issued from the SUNDIAL project, where numerous communication failures are observed. The dialogue strategy follows mainly our second model, but as the verification constraint was not strictly followed, results are far from optimum. Our representation approach seems efficient and should provide a good tool for oral dialogue systems designers.
