A novel subspace approach for speech enhancement using a subband whitening filter is proposed. Previous subspace approaches for enhancement either assumed white noise or used a fullband prewhitening filter before enhancement for colored noise. The previous approaches were successful only in reducing the upper bound of the signal distortion while reducing noise. However, the proposed method minimizes the overall signal distortion while reducing noise. Experimental results show that the proposed method attains higher segmental signal-to-noise ratio (seg_SNR) than that attained by Ephraim et al. and also by the Wiener filter algorithm. In addition, the proposed algorithm requires less computational load than previous subspace approaches.
