ISI entered two statistical machine translation systems in the IWSLT evaluation this year: one was phrase-based and the other syntax-based. The syntax-based system represents the results of a current research effort, while the phrase-based system is representative of the current techniques in state-ofthe- art machine translation. This paper primarily describes the syntax-based system and its comparison to the phrasebased system. We will give a brief overview of the components of the systems and discuss the performance on the IWSLT development data, the evaluation results, and some post-evaluation results.
