Language models will play in increasinly important role in the speech technology systems of the future. At present little is known about formal procedures to guide the development of such models or to assess their real-world performance. In this contribution a number of factors is discussed that affect the power of language models. The role of linguistic data bases will be discussed and a number of proposals for future research conclude the paper.
