The determination of vowel perception limits using speech synthesis

Les Doherty

A speech synthesizer was developed to explore the perception limits of voiced phonemes. Experimenters were asked to adjust the point where a sound was no longer perceived as a particular phoneme by changing the formant frequencies using keyboard frequency controls. The results obtained were consistent and provide a set of limits that may be used for English language phoneme detection.
