Abstract In this paper we try to demonstrate communicative and language functions of prosodic expressions of attitudes. In addition to the universal expressions, which are comprehensible regardless of the mother tongue, there exist the prosodic realizations typical of a particular language. This ones function as language signs, whose principal quality is arbitrariness. As in the case of verbal signs, the relation between prosodic signs and their meaning is not symmetrical. Even within one and the same language, there can be found frequent cases of synonymy or homonymy. In the communication between two speakers, where at least one of them is not speaking his mother tongue, the situation is more complicated. Note: The body of this paper is written in French.
