As a part of a project aimed at developing of an Italian text-to-speech system, a morpho-syntactic analyzer was set up. The main goal of this analyzer was to provide all the syntactic and morphologic features for each word of a written text. Furthermore, the phonetic transcription of each word was determined. Finally, syntactically related words were marked to form a suitable basis for pitch contour determination.
