The new SIG brings together ESCA members with a special interest in Speech Synthesis. The SIG will provide a means of exchanging news on recent research developments through a web site and the organisation of meetings and workshops, and will make available relevant resources. The application was supported by 57 members, and the initial and temporary officers of the SIG are: * Wolfgang Hess, University of Bonn, Germany, chairman; * Nick Campbell, ATR, Japan, vice-chair and liaison representative; * Bernd Moebius, Bell Labs, USA, secretary. An election of the SIG's officers shall take place at ICSLP-98 in Sydney, Australia. If you want to join the Speech Synthesis SIG contact Bernd Moebius at bmo@research.bell-labs.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------- A European Masters in Language and Speech ESCA and EACL play a key role in a newly proposed scheme for a European Masters in Language and Speech. To overcome the legal barriers in Europe with respect to recognition of academic degrees, the Masters actually provides a quality stamp from our professional organisations. The scheme is open to all universities that provide students with a defined package of skills and knowledge in Speech and Language Technology. The Masters is being prepared by a consortium of 10 universities as a project under the EU Socrates programme. More information can be found at the Masters' website at http://www.cstr.ed.ac.uk/EURO (open from 15 September onwards). -------------------------------------------------------------------------- IMPORTANT DEADLINES: MATISSE - ESCA/SOCRATES workshop on 'Method And Tool Innovations for Speech Science Education' 16-17 April 1999 at University College, London.
