New conferences are planned and many of us may meet again in Beijing for ICSLP'2000. Hopefully also at the next ISCA-conference, Eurospeech 2001 - Scandinavia that takes place in Aalborg, Denmark during the period September 3 - 7, 2001. Information about Eurospeech 2001 - Scandinavia is now available on our Web server at http://eurospeech2001.org where you may find a copy of the folder "Call for Papers and Invitation to Participate" and A4- and A3-sized copies of the Eurospeech 2001 poster. Both files are in pdf-format. Please take the opportunity to update yourself as to this event. We are aware that it is not customary (and probably not legal) to establish a mailing list of people who might have interest in getting updated information on Eurospeech 2001 - Scandinavia by passing on mailing lists from previous conferences as no permission to do this was requested. We therefore invite you to register on the Eurospeech 2001 - Scandinavia Web server http://eurospeech2001.org/information/info_register.html to become a member of the Eurospeech 2001 - Scandinavia mailing list from where you will receive regular information about updates on Eurospeech 2001 - Scandinavia. At the time of your possible registration to the mailing list, we hope you will give us permission to pass your e-mail address on to future Eurospeech conferences. The above referenced Web page enables you to register for update information independent of your preference for passing on your e-mail address. Sorry for any inconveniences caused by multiple mails concerning the Eurospeech 2001 - Scandinavia mailing list. Yours sincerely, Paul Dalsgaard Member of Conference Committee Eurospeech 2001 - Scandinavia ============================================================================ ISCA Tutorial and Research Workshop on Hands-Free Speech Communication April 9-11, 2001 Kyoto Japan [http://www.slt.atr.co.jp/hsc2001/] Sponsored by ATR in cooperation with the IEEE SP Society. Call for Papers The workshop on hands-free speech communication, organized in cooperation with the IEEE Signal Processing Society and ATR Spo- ken Language Translation Laboratories will be held April 9-11, 2001, in Kyoto Japan. This workshop is planned to allow researchers and system developers to discuss technologies and applications on hands-free speech communication. It will provide a valuable means sharing knowledge and experiences in hands-free speech processing in order to cope with the increasing interest and demand in speech communication technologies. The workshop will cover all scientific and engineering topics in hands-free speech communication technology. We would highly appreciate the attendance of researchers and developers in various fields to encourage flexible thinking about new approaches to current prob- lems and new applications for global and individual communica- tion. Prospective authors are invited to submit papers describing original work in any of the areas relevant to the workshop. The Scientific Committee of the workshop will select papers for pre- sentation. A copy of each paper will be published in the workshop proceedings. A paper proposal submission implies a commitment to present a paper if accepted. [Workshop Themes] The workshop focuses on technologies in hands-free speech com- munication as follows. * Distant-talking speech signal retrieval * Removal of noise and reverberation in real environments * Echo canceling for hands-free speech communication * Robust distant-speech recognition * Model adaptation for distant-talking speech recognition * Robust auditory features for distant-talking speech recogni- tion * A microphone array for hands-free speech communication * Bimodal, multi-modal speech recognition * Bimodal, multi-modal speech synthesis * Acoustic environment database and tools [Important Dates] December 1, 2000 Deadline for submission of summary January 15, 2001 Notification of acceptance/rejection February 28, 2001 Deadline for submission of camera-ready paper and advance registration April 9-11, 2001 Workshop [Submission of Abstract] Abstracts of original papers may be submitted by e-mail. They should be sent to sec-hsc2001@slt.atr.co.jp. They must be received no later than December 1, 2000. All abstracts must be accompanied by the following completed "abstract cover form": * Paper title * Authors * Author to contact * Name * Full Address * Phone * Fax * E-mail * Key-words (min. 3, max. 8) Describe concisely the problem that you have addressed and its importance (max. 10 lines). Describe the original contribution of your work, and compare it to previous work (max. 10 lines, give references at the end of the abstract). Submission of an abstract implies the commitment to attend the workshop and to present the paper, if it is accepted. [Format of Abstract] Abstracts should not exceed 500 words (everything included). Abstracts sent by E-mail should be in plain ASCII with lines of no more than 80 characters. The same holds for the "abstract cover form". If abstracts are sent by post, include 4 copies of the abstract and the "abstract cover form". The workshop will contain a mix of discussion papers and hands-on analysis of speech materials (within the general ToBI framework). We welcome contributions on the analysis both of 'standard' varieties of English such as General American, Australian, New Zealand, or Southern British English, and of emerging varieties of English such as Singapore or Hong-Kong English, as well as of geographic and sociolinguistic variation in intonation and prosody. Submissions of theme suggestions are requested by July 21st, of paper abstracts by August 25th. Further details can be found on our website (see below). Registration cost is likely to be around NZ$100 (NZ$50 for students). A limited amount of accommodation can be arranged through the University. For details (including registration and submission schedule), visit the workshop website: http://www.vuw.ac.nz/lals/WAVEip or email Paul.
