Those members whose membership will run out at the end of the year should have received their renewal invoice by now where they can check a box if they wish to subscribe to Speech Communication. Subscription to the journal, however, is open to any member of ISCA. To subscribe to Speech Communication in 2001 you must be a member of ISCA at some time during 2001. This means that all those who are a member of ISCA in January 2001 are entitled to subscribe to the journal in 2001. Subscription to Speech Communication is handled via the ISCA Secretariat but is paid directly to the publisher (Elsevier, Amsterdam). If you are a member in January 2001 and want to subscribe to Speech Communication or to extend an existing subscription, please send an e-mail to the ISCA Secretariat and tell us 1) that you want to subscribe to the journal, 2) at what rate (individual member or student rate), and 3) where to ship the journal (in case of a new subscription or if your address has changed). Please remember that the subscription period for Speech Communication always coincides with a calendar year although ISCA membership, due to the monthly membership scheme, may differ from that. I wish you a pleasant Christmas and a happy and successful New Year 2001. Sincerely, Wolfgang Hess, Secretary, ISCA ============================================================================= ISCA Tutorial and Research Workshop on: Prosody in Speech Recognition and Understanding Advance Notice and Call for Participation The Molly Pitcher Inn Red Bank NJ October 22-24, 2001 http://ssli.ee.washington.edu/conferences/prosody Aims: While there is a long tradition of experimentation with the use of prosodic information in speech recognition, these experiments have been largely unsuccessful from the point of view of improving transcription accuracy. However, more recently, there have been renewed and more successful efforts to find ways of incorporating prosodic information into a wider variety of ASR-related tasks, such as identifying speech acts, locating 'important' words and phrases, improving rejection accuracy, finding topic segment boundaries, locating and processing disfluencies, identifying user corrections, identifying speakers and languages, detecting speaker emotions, and so on. For all of these research areas, the collection of appropriate corpora and the development of useful prosodic labeling schemes for them have been critical. This workshop will focus on new ways to use prosodic information to enhance speech recognition/understanding and supporting tasks. Papers on speech technologies and their applications involving any aspect of prosody in recognition and understanding are encouraged. We especially encourage papers on prosody in: * language modeling * acoustic modeling * lexicon design * confidence modeling (e.g. improving rejection) * identifying speech acts * analyzing user corrections * identifying disfluencies * topic and discourse segmentation * speaker identification * identifying speaker emotions * prosodic labeling conventions and corpus collection Important Dates: Submissions due: April 13, 2001 Notification of Acceptance: June 1, 2001 Deadline for Early Registration: June 15, 2001 Deadline for Regular Registration: July 15, 2001 Workshop: October 22-24, 2001 Workshop Location: The Molly Pitcher Inn (http://www.mollypitcher.com) is a waterfront inn, located on the Navasink River in Red Bank NJ, part of the New Jersey Shore region. It is convenient to boating and beaches, with good public transportation to New York City and convenient to Newark Airport. Accommodation and Registration Fees: TBA Proceedings: Workshop proceedings will be available upon registration at the conference center and subsequently on the workshop web site. This will follow the last ICSLP conference which was organized in Beijing, China in October 2000, and the next one ICSLP'2002 (INTERSPEECH'2002) in Denver, USA. The selection criteria that will be used to evaluate bids are posted on the WWW Home Page of the Permanent Council http://www.icslp.org All bids should specifically address the details of the selection criteria. Potential bidders should take into account the fact that, at its recent meeting in Beijing, the PC-ICSLP voted unanimously to accept an offer from the International Speech Communication Association (ISCA) to provide the same financial and organisational support to ICSLP conferences as they do to the Eurospeech series (subject to local needs). Bidders may refer to http://www.isca-speech.org/guidelinesEurospeech.html for more information on ISCA's procedures. The deadline for receipt of bid documents (electronic form) by the Council Secretary is February 28th, 2001. Notification of an intention to bid should be directed to the Council Secretary as soon as possible. Bids will be considered by the Permanent Council in April 2001. Please Reply to Council Secretary by EMAIL: Isabel.Trancoso@inesc.pt ============================================================================= All additional information at the ISCA web-site: http://www.isca-speech.org The ISCA secretariat can be contacted at: info@isca-speech.org Requests concerning membership, Speech Communication and ordering Proceedings should be forwarded to the Secretariat.
