ISCA Greetings, Isabel Trancoso ============================================================================= LATEST NEWS FROM Eurospeech 2001 - Scandinavia The web server of Eurospeech 2001 - Scandinavia at http://eurospeeech2001.org has been updated. It now contains information needed by authors who plan to submit contribution(s) to the conference, about most of the planned Eurospeech Special events (ESE's) and on a number of satellite events linked to the conference. Some of them in Aalborg, others at other locations. Each paper submission includes the following documents: a) The paper in POSTSCRIPT format - mandatory b) The English abstract in TEXT format - mandatory c) An optional Non-English abstract in pdf- or HTML-format d) An optional link to additional information relevant to the paper The Web server gives detailed information on: 1) Overall information on papers submitted to a regular conference session or to a dedicated ESE session and to authors acceptance/rejection information 2) Paper preparation guidelines, including templates 3) Document submission guidelines 4) Document submission form All document handling takes place electronically, including review and printing of Proceedings. We therefore kindly ask all potential authors to strictly follow the guidelines and formats as given in the above guidelines 2) & 3). PLEASE, note that a paper submitted for review MUST be the full and final paper. Therefore, we encourage authors to start preparing their paper now, following the guidelines and templates prepared for you under Item 2) above. The DEADLINE is March 30, 2001. Each author/co-Author will receive the acceptance/rejection notification in the beginning of June - at the latest. As compared to earlier Eurospeech conferences - where authors had to submit extended abstracts in December - you are given almost three extra months for preparing the full and final paper. Authors further have the option to send an optional link to additional information relevant to the paper, e.g. where latest results may be referenced. Note that this link will be included in the CD-ROM Proceedings. We are looking forward to receive your contributions and to see you all in Aaalborg Kind regards Paul Dalsgaard ============================================================================= ISCA Board meeting The last ISCA Board meeting took placed in Lisbon during the past weekend, hosted by Isabel Trancoso. In the next ISCApads, we'll tell you more about our planned activities to expand membership services and specially about the new activities concerning new, budding fields/topics, regional activities, etc. ============================================================================= Internships in speech industries and labs Volontary summer work and mandatory internships concern most students in speech processing. Summer work is generally a student demand aiming at improving his/her perception of the industrial life, and at meeting their interests in speech processing for the future of their curriculum and at improving his/her fluency in a given language . It is an excellent opportunity for the company to exhibit a positive image for future hiring. Mandatory internships are part of the curriculum and mostly last several months (4-6 months and sometimes more). Students have to work in a research or development team and contribute to a realization that could be demonstrated. Co-publications with members of the technical staff of the company are elicited. To facilitate matches between the needs of the speech industry and the future speech scientists, ISCA-Training plans to create a data base of internships . The decision to accept a student in the company remains strictly in the hands of the company. ISCA-Training invites companies to send to edu@isca-speech.org internship proposals with the following information: -Company name -location -dates -duration -topic -educational level required (BSc, MSc, Engineering, mid- or end of curriculum) -contact administrative person with full address -contact technical supervisor with full address -student compensation: yes or no? -other supports: lodging (help or proposed at special rate), corporate cafetaria, contribution to travel expenses. -AUTHORIZATION to advertize these offers on the ISCA Web site and/or ISCA News (f.i. ISCAPad) ============================================================================= The Christian Benoit Mentoring scheme. Young researchers starting a thesis or having little experience in paper writing and submission can receive help of seniors through the Christian Benoit Mentoring scheme. With the approaching deadline for the major ISCA event EUROSPEECH in Aalborg (Denmark), September 3-7, 2001, there is a good opportunity to ask help in the preparation of the papers. There is no correlation between mentors and future reviewers so that use of mentors is always a good opportunity to avoid future rejection of papers for weak English or presentation. Help can be obtained for any other future conferences, workshops devoted to speech and language processing (ICASSP, ICSLP, ITRW,...) For details, http://www.isca-speech.org/training.html. ============================================================================= Institutional Membership The note in ISCApad #29 about this type of membership raised some questions. Here 's a more clear explanation: ISCA institutional members pay 4 times the individual member fee. They are entitled to up to 5 reduced inscriptions fees at "each" event organized by ISCA (EUROSPEECH, Tutorial & Research Workshops, etc.). In addition, they can also benefit from one reduced annual subscription to the Journal Speech Communication, and receive one ISCA directory once a year. Please contact the Secretariat for more information on how to apply for institutional membership. ============================================================================= Distribution of ISCApad #30 A problem with the ISCA server in Bonn caused some email distribution problems which resulted in some members not having received the November issue of ISCApad. Sorry for that. By clicking on "News" on the ISCA webpage you can read the latest issue. Previous issues can be found under publications. ============================================================================= MODELS AND ANALYSIS OF VOCAL EMISSIONS FOR BIOMEDICAL APPLICATIONS 13-15 September 2001, Firenze, Italy We are glad to announce you that during the Conference the following tutorials will be held: a..
