For more information: http://www.isca-speech.org ============================================================================= JOB OPENINGS ============= UPV Bilbao ---------- SPANISH MCYT GRANT FOR A PHD'STUDENT RESEARCH GROUP: Pattern recognition and Speech Technologies at the University of the Basque Country (Bilbao-Spain). FRAMEWORK PROJECT (coordinated with two more Spanish Universities: Zaragoza and Politécnica de Valencia): "Dialog system for information access trough spontaneous speech over different tasks". SUPPORTED BY: Spanish Governement under Project code TIC2002-04103-C03-02 Period: 3 years begining on 2003. DEADLINE: December 12th 2002 European and Latinamerican applicants are particulary welcomed. For further information, please contact M. Inés Torres (manes@we.lc.ehu.es or +34 94 601 2715) AS SOON AS POSIBLE and have a look to institutional information in: http://www.mcyt.es/becasfpi WORK PROPOSAL: The research work to be developed is framed on the activities and responabilities of our group in the project, mainly related with specific modelling of sponteaneous speech in speech understanding and dialog systems. In particular we are interested to deal with two important problems: the definition of robust language models to work over application tasks where the avalaible training corpus is quite reduced and the analysis and developement of specific language models to deal with spontaneous speech and natural language. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- University of Surrey UK ----------------------- PHD STUDENTSHIP: The Centre for Vision Speech and Signal Processing at the University of Surrey (www.ee.surrey.ac.uk/CVSSP) offers a PhD studentship for UK or EU citizens in Speech and Audio Processing. See http://www.ee.surrey.ac.uk/Personal/P.Jackson/PhD_SAP.html for further details. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- AT EPFL (Switzerland) ---------------------- Two Ph.D. students in multi-modal biometric authentication The EPFL Speech Processing Group, the National Centre of Competence in Research (IM)2 and IDIAP offer two Ph.D. student positions for research on advanced techniques for biometric authentication. The work aims at developing automatic biometrics-based recognition approaches towards the use and efficient modelling of uncertain information about unreliable and missing sensory data for robust speaker, face, fingerprint and signature recognition and optimal fusion strategies for multi-modal biometric recognition. The candidates, with a university degree, are expected to have good knowledge of digital signal processing, particularly in the domain of statistical signal processing, and have a sound experience in programming. A working knowledge of English and French is required. Interested candidates are invited to send a CV as soon as possible to: Dr. Andrzej Drygajlo EPFL-STI-ITS CH-1015 Lausanne Email: andrzej.drygajlo@epfl.ch Tel.: +41 21 693 43 28 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tenure-track Position in Speech Recognition at the Ohio State University ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Department of Computer and Information Science invites applications for several tenure-track/tenured positions. A target area of recruiting for 2003 is speech recognition, which complements existing campus-wide research activities. Appointments at all ranks will be considered. Applicants for an assistant professor position should hold or be completing a Ph.D. in computer science and engineering or a closely related field, and have a commitment to excellent research and quality teaching. Applicants for a senior position should also demonstrate a strong record of external funding and impact on their field. More information is available at www.cis.ohio-state.edu/department/CIS-Faculty-positions.html To apply, send a curriculum vita (including names and addresses of at least three references) and a statement of research and teaching interests, by e-mail to: fsearch@cis.ohio-state.edu (Faculty Search) or by mail to: Chair, Faculty Search Committee Department of Computer and Information Science The Ohio State University 2015 Neil Avenue, DL395 Columbus, OH 43210-1277 USA ============================================================================= JOURNALS and BOOKS =================== _ Call for Papers International Journal of Speech Technology Special Issue on Chinese Spoken Language Technology (see ISCApad 53) - This is to remind you that the deadline for paper submission regarding SSPR-2003 is coming SOON (December 20th). It also includes speaker and language recognition. Those various processing may be conducted in a noisy environment, which makes the problem even more difficult. Those two volumes dedicated to spoken language processing address the following topics: how to realize speech production and perception, how to synthesize and understand speech, with the support of the presently available knowledge in signal processing, pattern recognition, stochastic modeling, computational linguistics, human factor studies but also with the help of knowledge specifically related to speech.
