Bishnu S. Atal

May 1933 – August 2026

Bishnu S. Atal was awarded the ISCA Medal for scientific achievement in 2018 for his pioneering contributions to speech coding and speech analysis. He received the medal when Interspeech took place in his native country, India.

As a researcher at Bell Labs (since 1961), Bishnu did groundbreaking research in room acoustics, speech analysis, speech synthesis, and low bit rate speech coding that established linear prediction as one of the most important speech analysis technique leading to many applications for coding, recognition and synthesis of speech. In particular, he was one of the primary inventors of multipulse linear predictive coding and code-excited linear prediction (CELP) for low bit rate coding of speech. The tremendous impact this family of analysis-by-synthesis coders--that have been engines of the wireless revolution--is one of the significant contributions that sets Bishnu apart from others. It is pretty much there in every phone we use today, across the globe.

Bishnu's contributions as a pioneering researcher were broad, transformative and enduring, but he also excelled as a leader and as a mentor. As a leader at Bell Labs (since 1985), he managed a broad research portfolio  in electro-acoustics, hearing, speech analysis, speech coding, speech synthesis, and speech and speaker recognition. He spearheaded the development of multipulse linear predictive coding and code-excited linear prediction techniques as standards for digital transmission of voice on cellular radio systems in North America, Europe, Japan, and elsewhere in the world to meet the increasing demand for cellular phones. He also revived research in automatic speech and speaker recognition, and transferred technology to Business Units to establish AT&T as a world leader in speech recognition products and services. Notably, though not published, Bishnu’s contributions to national and international security are tremendous, including in setting up secure voice communication systems. Bishnu has mentored numerous scientists over the years who have become world class in their own right.

Following his retirement from Bell Labs and AT&T Labs, in 2003, he continued to share his expertise as an Affiliate Professor at the University of Washington. His accomplishments reflected an unwavering commitment to advancing knowledge for the benefit of society and his contributions continue to influence generations of researchers, engineers, and innovators.  Yet those who knew Bishnu best will remember not only his extraordinary professional accomplishments but also his warmth, humility, intellectual curiosity, and deep devotion to his family.

Bishnu Atal was a National Academician of both Engineering and Sciences and a Franklin Laureate Medalist, besides a long list of prestigious IEEE and AT&T Awards, culminating in the ISCA Medal.

Jordan Cohen

August 1946 – August 2026

Throughout a distinguished career spanning the NSA, IDA, IBM, SRI, Semantic Machines, and extensive independent consulting, Jordan Cohen was a pioneering force in speech processing research, both as a researcher and as an amplifier of the work of others. One of his most significant contributions to the speech community while at the Institute for Defense Analysis (IDA) was the instantiation of the CAIP Workshops at Rutgers University in 1993 and 1994, which in 1995 moved to Johns Hopkins and eventually evolved into the Fredrick Jelinek Memorial Summer Workshop series. At the CAIP workshops, Jordan co-developed the first popular algorithms for Vocal Tract Length Normalization (VTLN) used for many years in ASR systems. He also played pivotal roles in the evolution of speech research within companies, playing significant founding or managing roles within CISCO, Voice Signal, Dragon Systems, and Semantic Machines.
